Homeschooling in South Africa

Homeschooling has gained more popularity over recent years but it is as old as time itself. For centuries, parents have been teaching their own children, it is only in more recent times that the traditional schooling system, as we know it, has been the norm.

What you should know:

  • Homeschooling IS legal in South Africa
  • Parents need to register their children for homeschooling and NOT service providers (see more about registration here)
  • Homeschooling is where the parent takes responsibility for their children’s education and is available to assist their children but MAY use a large variety of resources, including: online videos and tuition, text books, library, tutors, worksheet, field trips etc.
  • Different curricula may be used as long as it is not of a lesser standard than the South African CAPS.

For many children, mainstream schooling is becoming increasingly more difficult to manage, for various reasons, and they are turning to homeschooling.
